After promoting Nicholas Latifi as a full-time driver for the 2020 season, Williams needed to find a new reserve driver. This has now been accomplished. The Grove team has just officially announced the arrival of Jack Aitken as a reserve driver for the 2020 Formula 1 season.

The 24-year-old driver holds dual British and South Korean nationality. A former driver of the Renault Sport Academy, which he left a few days ago, Aitken was a reserve driver and test driver for the Renault F1 Team. He participated in the Formula 2 championship in 2018 and 2019. Last season, he won 3 races with the Campos Racing team and finished fifth in the Formula 2 championship. Prior to that, he was a double champion in Formula Renault and finished second in GP3 in 2017.

In his role as reserve driver, Aitken will attend all the races of the 2020 season. He will participate with Williams in a free practice session on a Friday morning. The circuit has not yet been chosen.

Aitken is delighted with his new role within the Williams team: It’s a great honor to join ROKiT Williams Racing as a reserve driver for the 2020 season. Williams is a team with a strong heritage and continued longevity, and I look forward to contributing directly to their development through my work in the simulator and testing.

Claire Williams, deputy team director, welcomes the arrival of her new driver: “With what he has already accomplished, it is clear that Jack is a young driver with a great career ahead of him.” She adds: “We believe he has what it takes to reach the top of the championship. Jack has proven his talent in Formula 2 and GP3 and we are eager to see what he can achieve as the official reserve driver for the team.”

With Aitken’s arrival as reserve driver, Williams has 6 drivers in its team. George Russell and Nicholas Latifi will be the main drivers, Roy Nissany will be the test driver, Jamie Chadwick will retain the role of development driver while Dan Ticktum has joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy.
