Carlos Sainz explains the origin of the “smooth operator”
Since Silverstone, Carlos Sainz enjoys singing over the radio, performing the famous song "Smooth Operator" by Sade. But the McLaren driver reveals an interesting anecdote about it.

At the British Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz celebrated his 6th place in a somewhat original way: he started singing the song “Smooth Operator.” After his 5th place (his second top 5 finish in 2019) achieved in Hungary, he sang this song again. Finally, in Brazil, after his 4th place (which turned into a podium after Lewis Hamilton’s penalty), he once more burst into song.
When asked where this celebration came from, the Spanish driver explained that it was a song that kept playing on the radio during the British GP weekend. “I started hearing it on the radio, and apparently, it’s quite a well-known song.”
He added that he sang this song without knowing what “smooth operator” meant and that people on the team started to explain to him what a “smooth operator” was (someone very skillful) and he thought, well, maybe I can claim that and start spreading a little joke around me.
Finally, the Iberian driver admitted to going to the song’s comments to read the remarks about him: « I read a few, and there are some really funny ones, for example “We are here thanks to Carlos,” and you see 1000 likes on it. »
The fruitful collaboration between Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris will continue in 2020, where McLaren will attempt to continue its progress.
