It was only a matter of time before Nicholas Latifi was announced as the replacement for Robert Kubica, who had been struggling significantly since the start of the season. Everything in its time must have been the thinking of the Williams management, as we had to wait until the final weekend of the season for our suspicions to be confirmed.

Claire Williams, director of Williams, stated: “I am delighted to announce that Nicholas will take on the role of race driver with George, his partner, in 2020. All members of Williams have been immensely impressed by his results achieved this year in Formula 2, as well as his dedication to the team, and the work he has done behind the scenes. Nicholas has become an established and respected member of Williams, and we look forward to seeing him take on this new role, as we seek to carve our path to the midfield.”

Latifi’s career has been quite irregular in the feeder series, with only 7 wins overall but some standout performances in both races and qualifying. Notably, his 2019 F2 season is the best of his career as he accumulated 7 podiums including 4 victories.

Certainly, the Canadian had a good Formula 2 season, but it is important to highlight that it was his fifth season, and any hope of him winning the title is already impossible after Nyck de Vries won the title a month ago in Russia with a 72-point lead over his competitors.

After being a test driver with Force India in 2018 and then with Williams in 2019, the Montreal native finally has a full-time racing role. A role he already enjoys very much: « I am thrilled to become a racing driver for 2020. I have greatly enjoyed working with the team this year, helping in the development of the car and assisting wherever I can on the track and at the factory. I look forward to the journey ahead with the team and am excited to make my Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2020. »

The 2020 grid is therefore complete. The big loser in this story is undoubtedly Nico Hülkenberg, who is now officially without a seat after his was taken by Esteban Ocon.
