Sergio Perez extends with Racing Point until 2022

Yesterday, during the press conference at the start of the weekend, Sergio Perez hoped to be able to make an announcement about his future “very quickly.” When he attended the team principals’ conference, Otmar Szafnauer suggested that an announcement would indeed be made quickly, possibly even today.

It didn’t take more to excite the appetite of the media present in the room, but the team director had limited himself to saying that the team had a specific process for this kind of announcements and that he would not say more.

It was therefore through a press release that the announcement arrived at the end of the day, while the media center was busy drafting the season reports and end-of-session statements.

The surprise, therefore, came from seeing both parties commit to the long term, as commented by Otmar Szafnauer: « Sergio is convinced by the long-term vision of this project. Securing his commitment until the end of the 2022 season gives us an interesting stability to project into the future. As the team continues to grow and develop, it is important to have a driver with Sergio’s level of experience, especially with the new regulations on the horizon. »

The collaboration between the two parties is exceptionally long since it began in 2014 when the driver was ejected from McLaren in favor of Kevin Magnussen. He has therefore become very close to the team members: « I have been working with this group of people for a long time now. They have become my second family. »

With Lance Stroll, the son of the team’s owner, Racing Point can therefore rely on its duo of drivers for an extended period, which can only help to smoothly pass the milestone of the technical revolution scheduled for 2021.
