Unlike other sports, motorsport rarely represents nations. Glory is often attributed to the drivers, who, even if they may represent their country, do so mainly to prove that they are the best. Even if the teams and manufacturers are affiliated with a country, it is the brand image that often takes precedence over everything else.

It is to address this that the FIA created the FIA Motorsport Games. A competition in which nations, represented by drivers from many backgrounds, fight for victory. The unique aspect? The championship consists of multiple disciplines such as GT, Karting, Formula 4, Drift, Touring, and finally Sim Racing.

For each category, countries will have the choice to involve a driver who will be selected by the respective national sports authorities. Similar to the Olympic Games, the first three drivers will receive medals. The victorious nation will be the one with the best score on the medal table.

In summary, one can say that the FIA Motorsports Games are a great way to democratize motorsport to an audience less familiar with it, who are not always ready to follow a championship throughout an entire season. This competition will also help to introduce disciplines other than Formula 1. However, we regret the absence of Rally and other WRX, as well as Formula E, which could have reinforced the ecological aspect.

Finally, nations are being called upon! Up until now, they had only been mentioned in relation to the nationality of a driver or a team. Typically in Europe, drivers no longer have the same support as before and they are now dependent on young driver academies.

Translate: Jean Todt, the president of the FIA, seems delighted with this new competition: « I am pleased to launch the FIA Motorsport Games, which will combine various disciplines and all the elements of a major sports event. This is a novelty not only for motorsport enthusiasts and future generations of competitors, but also for those familiar with international sports. It is another opportunity for the ASNs and ACNs to engage with new audiences and harness patriotism within their respective countries. The support of the host club, the Automobile Club d’Italia, is greatly appreciated and I look forward to attending the first edition in Rome. »
