Season 11, the Gen3 Evo revolution

Two years ago, season 9 marked the arrival of Gen3 single-seaters in Formula E. After Gen1 (2014-2018) in which drivers had to change cars mid-race, Gen2 (2019-2022) with a greater range and able to complete a full race, drivers discovered a single-seater offering many innovations compared to its predecessors.

For season 11, the Gen3 Evo will make its appearance. Two years before the FE switches to Gen4, drivers will discover a single-seater with exceptional performance. Equipped with a new body kit and featuring a stronger, more robust, and aerodynamic chassis, the Gen3 Evo will push the boundaries in terms of energy regeneration, power, and performance.

With a maximum power of 350 kW, or about 470 horsepower, the Gen3 Evo will be able to reach 320 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.82 seconds. For comparison, the Gen1 had a top speed of 225 km/h. Its regenerative capacity will be 30% higher than that of a Formula 1 car and 36% higher than that of the Gen3.

The aim during the development of the Gen3 Evo was to make it the race car with the fastest acceleration in the world. According to estimates, no less than two seconds per lap will be gained on a circuit like Monaco. Additionally, the Gen3 Evo will be able to switch to four-wheel drive during qualifying, the race start, and the Attack Mode phases.

Finally, before making way for Bridgestone to supply Gen4 tires from season 13, South Korean manufacturer Hankook will offer tires providing between 5 and 10% additional grip.

A start grid once again turned upside down

As is often the case in Formula E, the driver transfer market has been hectic during the off-season. Out of the 11 teams competing, four are retaining their driver pairings, six are renewing half of them, and one is making a complete change. Compared to last season, Frenchman Sacha Fenestraz, Indian Jehan Daruvala, and Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara are leaving the championship. Three new arrivals worth noting are Barbadian Zane Maloney, Briton Taylor Barnard, and German David Beckmann.

DS Penske (Jean-Eric Vergne / Maximilian Günther)

Third season for the Gen3 and third season of collaboration with Penske Autosport for the DS Automobiles brand. Even without a victory last season, the Franco-American team proved that it had the weapons to fight at the front against Porsche and Jaguar. To regain the top step of the podium, DS Penske can always rely on its star driver Jean-Eric Vergne. The Frenchman will be joined by German driver Maximilian Günther, who moved from Maserati and is part of the Stellantis group like DS Automobiles.

Maserati MSG Racing (Stoffel Vandoorne / Jake Hughes)

If Maximilian Günther leaves Maserati for DS Penske, Stoffel Vandoorne will make the reverse journey. After two seasons at Satory, the champion of season 8 will have the same powertrain as his former team. The Belgian is looking to relaunch himself after only stepping on the podium once in two years. The Italian team based in Monaco is entirely renewing its duo of drivers as Jake Hughes will take the seat left vacant by Jehan Daruvala. After two solid seasons at McLaren, the Englishman is aiming to take a step forward at Maserati.

Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E Team (Pascal Wehrlein / Antonio Felix Da Costa)

Very consistent last season and winner of three races, Pascal Wehrlein became the first German driver to win the Formula E title at the end of his sixth season in the championship. Not surprisingly, he renews with Porsche with the goal of retaining his crown. Struggling in the first part of season 10, Antonio Felix da Costa then won four of the last seven races, allowing him to keep the confidence of his employer for another year.

Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team (Lucas di Grassi / Zane Maloney)

After two complicated years in partnership with the Cupra brand and a Mahindra powertrain, the German team ABT is partnering this season with Lola, which is making its grand return to motorsport, and with Yamaha for the engine side. To lead this German-British-Japanese combination to the top, ABT will always be able to count on the champion of season 3 Lucas di Grassi and the rookie Zane Maloney. A Formula 2 driver in 2024, the Barbadian will discover the Formula E championship as a full-time driver, as he was already a reserve driver for the Andretti team.

Jaguar TCS Racing (Mitch Evans / Nick Cassidy)

Favorites at the beginning of season 10 in both championships, Jaguar finally only obtained the team crown. However, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy collected podiums and fastest laps. While the former finished just six points behind Pascal Wehrlein, the latter was too inconsistent with five finishes outside the points including three retirements. The two New Zealanders are thus setting off again to fight for the driver’s title with the most performant team/engine combination on the grid for the past two seasons.

Neom McLaren Formula E Team (Sam Bird / Taylor Barnard)

After a season where they achieved their first victory in Formula E, the McLaren team is heading into a new campaign with the ambition of being at the forefront, notably thanks to a very performant Nissan power unit. In order to achieve this, they can still rely on a 100% British duo, albeit with a few changes. Winner in São Paulo last season, Sam Bird will still be part of the team. Injured for three races, the 37-year-old driver had been replaced by Taylor Barnard, his future teammate, who managed to score points twice.

Andretti Formula E (Jake Dennis / Nico Müller)

Despite a win at the beginning of last season, Jake Dennis did not manage to retain his title. He will have the opportunity to bring it back to the Andretti fold this season as he will still be the figurehead of the American team. After André Lotterer in season 9 and Norman Nato in season 10, Dennis will have a new teammate by his side in the form of Nico Müller. Coming from ABT team and with a strong end to the season, the Swiss driver joins the Porsche team, which powers his new team, with the aim of fighting for the top positions.

Kiro Race Co (Dan Ticktum / David Beckmann)

After competing in the first ten seasons of Formula E under Chinese flag, the team that allowed Nelson Piquet Jr to become the first champion of the discipline will now fly the American flag after being acquired by the investment company The Forest Road Company. In addition to welcoming new owners, the team will have the highly efficient Porsche powertrain. As for the drivers, Dan Ticktum retains his seat but will have a new teammate in the German David Beckmann who replaces the Brazilian Sergio Sette Camara.

Envision Racing (Robin Frijns / Sébastien Buemi)

Only sixth in the team championship last season while defending its title, Envision Racing might be disappointed with its season 10. With Jaguar, the Sino-British team has one of the most powerful powertrains on the grid. Still led by Frenchman Sylvain Filippi, Envision Racing can always rely on its experienced driver duo of Robin Frijns and Sébastien Buemi to regularly step onto the podium again.

Nissan Formula E Team (Oliver Rowland / Norman Nato)

Author of a magnificent season for his return to Nissan, Oliver Rowland managed to disrupt the Porsche and Jaguar drivers in the title race. Winning twice and often finishing well, he has once again positioned his team as a regular contender for victory. For season 11, the British driver will have Norman Nato by his side. Making a comeback after a season at Andretti where the chemistry never quite worked, the Frenchman replaces his compatriot Sacha Fenestraz who struggled all season in comparison to Rowland.

Mahindra Racing (Nyck de Vries / Edoardo Mortara)

After a difficult start to the season and an improvement in the last races, the Indian team, present in FE since the beginning of the electric championship, aims to do better than its modest 11th place in the championship in season 10. To achieve this, Mahindra is counting on the stability of its driver duo with Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara still on board the two single-seaters. The Dutch and the Swiss will try to regain their form from the Gen2 era when they were regularly fighting for podiums.

Several new features on the calendar

The Season 11 calendar of Formula E will run from December 7, 2024, to July 27, 2025, and will consist of sixteen races, the same number as the previous season. In terms of new features, the Gen3 Evo single-seaters will race at the Homestead Speedway in Miami, the only North American stage of the calendar, as Portland loses its two races after two years of presence.

Another ePrix that no longer appears in season 11 is the one in Misano Adriatico. To compensate for this loss, the Monaco and Tokyo ePrix will host two races, joining Jeddah, Shanghai, Berlin, and London on the list of cities hosting two rounds, while Jakarta makes its return for a single race.

To note finally that three out of ten destinations will host at least one FE race on permanent circuits (Mexico, Miami, Shanghai), and that unlike the previous two seasons, it is not Mexico but São Paulo that will open the new season.
