McLaren to leave Formula E at the end of the 2025 season for strategic reasons
Three years after entering the electric championship, McLaren has announced that it will end its involvement in Formula E at the end of the current season. The decision is part of an overall strategic redefinition of McLaren Racing.

McLaren confirmed this Friday that it would leave Formula E at the end of the 2025 season. The British team, also present in Formula 1 and IndyCar, indicated that it is now seeking a buyer for its electric team.
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, clarified the reasons for this departure. The time has come to explore other opportunities that more closely align with the overall strategic direction of McLaren Racing.
The announcement comes only two weeks after the confirmation of McLaren’s entry into the World Endurance Championship (WEC), scheduled for 2027.
An assumed and internally praised transition
Despite this withdrawal, McLaren retains fond memories of its time in Formula E. “We are immensely proud of what we have accomplished in Formula E,” emphasizes Zak Brown. The team, powered by Nissan, is currently in third place in the championship, with three podiums and a pole position to its credit thanks to young Taylor Barnard.
Ian James, the team director, emphasized the desire to maintain the level of commitment until the last race. We will give everything to ensure that we conclude the current chapter of our Formula E adventure in style.
Saluting an unmatched talent within the team, he also thanked the fan community for their loyalty.
Arrival in 2022 after the acquisition of the champion team Mercedes, McLaren will have marked the championship in a short time. Its withdrawal, while not unexpected, marks an important strategic turning point in the trajectory of the British team.
With its withdrawal, McLaren marks a pause in its electric strategy, but maintains a strong presence in motorsport with its commitments in Formula 1, IndyCar, and soon in endurance racing. A chapter ends, but the ambition of the brand remains intact.
