FIA: Towards a change in the Formula 1 points system?
The F1 Commission has discussed a possible overhaul of the points system for the 2026 season, which could extend to 11th and 12th places. A major change designed to strengthen competition and prepare for the arrival of new constructors.

A proposal to expand the points zone. During the second Formula 1 Commission meeting, held on April 25, 2025, in Geneva, several regulatory adjustments were discussed, particularly for the 2026 season. Among the key topics: the revision of the points system awarded to drivers and teams.
Today, only the top ten finishers at a Grand Prix receive championship points (25 points for the winner, 18 for the second, etc.). The new proposal aims to extend this distribution to the 11th and 12th places, awarding them points as well.
This change could prove decisive for less competitive teams that often struggle to enter the top 10. With the future arrival of Cadillac and potentially two additional cars on the grid, the Commission anticipates a fuller and more contested championship, where every point will matter more.
Expected impacts on race strategy and dynamics
If this new scale were to be adopted at the upcoming July meeting, it could profoundly change the ongoing strategies.
The teams could notably:
–Redéfinir leurs tactiques d’arrêts au stand pour sécuriser ces nouvelles places rémunérées en points,
–Adapter leur choix de pneus en fonction des enjeux stratégiques liés à ces positions,
–Motiver davantage les pilotes à se battre pour des places traditionnellement non récompensées.
By giving more value to positions beyond the top 10, this reform could make races more dynamic, increasing the competition in the middle of the pack and rewarding the performance of less dominant teams.
A considered yet uncertain evolution
This proposal is not an absolute novelty in the world of F1, but it has never been implemented to date. The Commission has decided to conduct a thorough analysis of the possible consequences before making a final decision.
It should also be noted that the awarding of the bonus point for the fastest lap in the race has been dropped, deemed too artificial in its impact on the outcome of the Grand Prix.
If the new scale comes into effect in 2026, it will mark a significant evolution in the sporting regulations, aiming to enhance competitiveness across the entire grid, encourage teams to fight for less prestigious positions, and offer fans even more exciting races.
