The former French driver, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, passed away yesterday at the age of 80, a prominent figure in the auto sport in France and the first driver to achieve victory for Renault in Formula 1 in 1979.

Three years after participating in the development of the turbo engine at Renault, Jean-Pierre Jabouille will secure two victories in Formula 1, offering both to the French constructor by winning the first one at the French Grand Prix held at the time in Dijon.

In a statement, Alpine F1 (formerly Renault) expresses its “sadness” and pays tribute to the memory of a “pioneer” of its generation: Alpine is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Jean-Pierre Jabouille. A true gentleman, brilliant engineer, and pioneer of our sport, Jean-Pierre was a genuine racer.

With his resilient and bold attitude, Jean-Pierre was the spearhead of the Renault adventure in F1 from 1977. He led Renault to its first Grand Prix victory in 1979, a defining moment in Renault’s journey in Formula 1.

Her determination and thirst for success have inspired many, and these values remain at the heart of the team now sporting the blue colors of Alpine. We are where we are today thanks to Jean-Pierre and his legacy will endure.

This news is another sad moment in French motor racing after the deaths of Patrick Tambay and Philippe Streiff in December. Jean-Pierre, Patrick, and Philippe will forever be in our thoughts.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to his family and closest friends. Thank you for everything, Jean-Pierre.
