Andreas Seidl or Jost Capito? One of the two men should take the helm of Alfa Romeo F1
Frédéric Vasseur's departure from Ferrari leaves a vacancy at Alfa Romeo F1. In view of Audi's arrival alongside Sauber in 2026, it could well be that the brand with the rings will recall a former member of the Volkswagen group to head up its F1 program.

After a Formula 1 season marked by numerous moves in the driver transfer market, it is now the turn of the team bosses’ market to heat up.
Following Mattia Binotto’s resignation from Ferrari a few days ago, the F1 world impatiently awaited the name of his successor to lead the prestigious Scuderia. The answer officially came a few hours ago as the rumors linking Frédéric Vasseur to Maranello materialized. The Frenchman will thus become the first French national at the helm of the team with the Prancing Horse since Jean Todt, who led Ferrari during Michael Schumacher’s dominance in F1 at the beginning of the century.
Now it remains to be seen who will succeed Vasseur at the helm of Alfa Romeo F1. As a reminder, the partnership between Sauber and the Biscione brand will end in late 2023. Starting from 2026, Sauber will continue its F1 adventure with Audi. The person chosen to lead Hinwil should also be at the helm of the Audi F1 team in 2026.
On December 12th, Williams and their Team Principal Jost Capito announced their separation. Since then, rumors suggest that the German executive made this decision to replace Vasseur. This information seems plausible given the ties between Capito and the Volkswagen Group, the owner of the Audi brand. As the Director of Volkswagen Motorsport in the early 2010s, the former Williams F1 leader played a significant role in Sébastien Ogier’s domination in the World Rally Championship with the Polo WRC. Therefore, Capito’s arrival at Sauber would not be a big surprise.
However, the position of director at Sauber/Audi could also potentially go to another former Volkswagen member. Currently the Team Principal at McLaren F1, Andreas Seidl is also among the favorites to succeed Vasseur. As the head of Porsche’s Endurance program from 2014 to 2017, the German played a crucial role in the success of the 919 Hybrid at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Since joining McLaren in 2019, he has notably leveraged his relationships with Mark Webber, former Porsche Endurance driver and agent for Oscar Piastri, to bring the Australian driver to Woking as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo.
Who between Capito or Seidl will take the lead of Sauber in anticipation of Audi’s arrival in F1 in 2026? The answer shouldn’t be long in coming.
Update: Andreas Seidl replaces Frédéric Vasseur at Alfa Romeo F1.
