Aston Martin is going through a very complicated season. With only 48 points in the constructors’ standings, the team is far from expectations. Last year, under the name Racing Point, the team finished in fourth place with 195 points. This shows the drop in performance. Between disappointing car and some bad luck in the races, Aston Martin prefers to focus on the future and think about 2022.

These are not the expected results for the team that wanted to continue the momentum of 2020. The AMR21 car has been significantly developed during the first half of the season according to Tom McCullough, the team’s performance director. He claims that the improvement in their pace is due to hard work in aerodynamics.

« It is an iterative development process. There is almost no visible part from the outside of our car that has not been improved in one way or another between Bahrain and Silverstone.

A confession that coincides with Sebastian Vettel’s performances in Hungary. The German then finished second in this Grand Prix before being disqualified at the end for a fuel issue. Better yet, he also finished second in Azerbaijan. Not bad for his debut with his new team.

« We know that our car is still not the fastest, but it is now closer to our main rivals. This is the result of a carefully managed aerodynamic improvement program that necessarily involved trials and errors.

However, there is still a long way to go. Currently in seventh place behind its direct competitors, Aston Martin will have a tough challenge for the rest of the season. In Hungary, it scored zero points (Stroll retired on the first lap, editor’s note). While there is still a lot of room for improvement, McCullough is focusing on the 2022 car that will arrive with the new era of F1.

« Like almost every team, after the summer break, we will transfer this effort and resources to the task of making our 2022 car as competitive as possible.

McCullough salutes the teamwork.

Looking back on the season, the engineer also asserts that his drivers did everything to score points by praising the consistency of Stroll and the experience of Vettel.

(e) We function well as a team. We don’t do everything correctly, no team does, but we have finished in the points nine times in eleven races. Which is a very commendable effort. It’s worth noting that Lance Stroll has finished in the top nine results in the points six times. A very consistent performance for a driver who is only 22 years old.
