The qualifying session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was marked by four interruptions. The drivers involved in the accidents kept their positions on the grid, much to the dismay of Fernando Alonso, who is 8th on the grid.

Lance Stroll and Antonio Giovinazzi in Q1, Daniel Ricciardo in Q2, then Yuki Tsunoda and Carlos Sainz in Q3. These are the protagonists of this rather crazy qualifying session.

Fernando Alonso thought that an existing rule in IndyCar – removing their two best laps from those responsible for red flags – would have been helpful during these qualifications. Drivers would be less tempted to push beyond their limits.

« [This session] was chaos,” said the Spaniard on the Sky F1 microphone. « It was difficult to get into the rhythm, but it was the same for everyone. We couldn’t exploit the car’s potential because we had new tires on each time.

« It is not fair that those who have an accident can repair their car and continue the race.

We are not allowed to touch the car under Parc Fermé regulations. Why would others have the right to do so?

The Asturian bull remains optimistic. Its Alpine gives it promising signs.

« We had a good car today. The whole weekend went well as we always finished in the top 10. […] We have a good chance of scoring some big points.

Following Lando Norris’s penalty , dropped from 6th to 9th place, Fernando Alonso will start from 8th place on the grid.
