We were orphaned by this unmissable appointment. The Monaco Grand Prix is finally back this weekend, this being its 78th edition. 2021 has started off with a bang with an intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Tension will be at its peak on a track where there is no room for error.

The importance of qualifications

Traced without runoff areas, the Monaco track is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountainous terrain. Elevation changes, acceleration zones, hairpin turns, chicanes, tunnel, casino, and even a small chapel are part of this Grand Prix program.

All the ingredients are gathered for emotions and passion to be even more intense than anywhere else. This is the magic of this pilgrimage site. While the races are sometimes less convincing due to a lack of overtaking opportunities, the qualifying session is always exhilarating.

Each driver must extract the quintessence of his single-seater and his driving. The gladiator/steed osmosis must be perfect. The focus will be at its maximum because in addition to obtaining a pole position in this symbolic place, being at the top of the timing sheet maximizes the chances of winning big in the race the next day.

Sir crowned for this princely weekend?

Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at the end of 2020, Sir Lewis Hamilton is the man in form at the start of this season. Though he is the driver of all superlatives, he has “only” three victories on the rock.

Behind him, a horde of young wolves thirsty for victories and titles are ready to steal the show from him, starting with his closest rival for the title, Max Verstappen. His desire to win and his very incisive car will be his assets in trying to turn the tables in the championship.

Do not forget that Daniel Ricciardo won in 2018. At the wheel of his splendid McLaren redecorated in “Gulf” colors, he will be a serious contender for the final result.

And if Ferrari seems to be slightly behind, this unusual track could allow Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc to fulfill one of his dreams: shine on his home soil.

The runner-up prizes for the most experienced?

With a certain stability in the technical regulations, and a decrease in the aerodynamic support of the single-seaters, the outsiders are lapping within the same tenths per lap. The performances are very close, perhaps the experience of some drivers could make the difference? Unless the zeal and opportunism of the younger ones pay off on this track that will not tolerate the slightest approximation.

Pirelli is introducing its softest range.

No more bets, please!
