The champion lifts some of the mystery surrounding his new contract. Discreet since signing the agreement at the beginning of February, Lewis Hamilton has finally reacted to his one-year extension.

« I just wanted a one-year contract »

Facing his new car, the British driver specified that he did indeed voluntarily choose the duration of the agreement with Mercedes. « I just wanted a year contract »,” he said at the launch of the W12 from the Brackley headquarters.

At the peak of his career after winning a seventh drivers’ title in 2020, Hamilton explained why he has not extended his contract beyond the end of the year so far.

« I am in an advantageous position. I have accomplished a large part of the things I wanted to achieve so far. We are living in a particular period and I just wanted a one-year contract. There is therefore no need to project too much into the future. We will discuss later if we want more. »

« We live in a particular period. So there is no need to project too much into the future. »

The continuation of the fight against racism

Like in 2020, 2021 will be for Hamilton the year of the battle for equality, against racial discrimination. His main fight, off the track, will continue: last year, there was a lot of discussion about equality and inclusion. This year, we still have to push for diversity and ensure that this direction is taken.

Like his radio message of hope for young people at the time of his seventh title in Turkey last year, Lewis Hamilton still wants to be at the forefront of the fight against racism in the F1 paddock.
