The Force India cars experienced contrasting fortunes in qualifying at Sochi. Sergio Perez made it through to Q3 and set the 7th fastest time. He'll start 6th tomorrow after Sebastian Vettel's penalty. By contrast, Nico Hülkenberg was stuck in Q2.

After three races spent in the shadow of Red Bull, Williams F1, which successfully tested a number of developments in Sochi, is keen to redress the balance on a circuit which, on the face of it, seems more favorable. Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas teased the Austrian cars on the timesheet on Friday.

McLaren enjoyed a profitable Friday in Sochi. Both Fernando Alonso's and Jenson Button's cars were generally on the pace of the top ten, and still have room for improvement in qualifying.

The Haas cars have had a similarly complicated start to the weekend in China, at least in terms of pace: both Romain Grosjean's and Esteban Guttierez's American single-seaters have barely managed to climb above 16th place.

On home turf in Paris, Renault e-Dams was no match for Lucas di Grassi's dominance. However, the men of the yellow-and-blue team were satisfied to have more than limited the damage, with 3rd and 4th places for Sebastian Buemi and Nicolas Prost.
