Spain also has to pay to watch Formula 1. For several seasons now, it’s DAZN, this new streaming provider, like Netflix, OCS, or Amazon, that holds the broadcasting rights for the Grand Prix, practice sessions, and qualifications.
During the 2023 season, Formula 1 experienced a consistent growth in its audience in Spain. This agreement highlights DAZN’s continuous commitment to broadcast Formula 1 in Spain and to offer a better quality product to its subscribers, the press release explains.
In comparison, Canal+ has acquired the rights until 2029 to exclusively broadcast Formula 1 in France, with a minimum of three races being broadcasted on free-to-air TV.
Note that DAZN is currently purchasing the broadcasting rights for major European football championships with the support of millions from its investors. DAZN particularly aims to gain market share in France and has already signed a partnership with Canal+ to co-broadcast certain Ligue 1 events. In return, DAZN shares a portion of the subscriptions with Canal+.
The benefit for a football fan is to have all the matches in one place, with a single subscription, while they are currently broadcast on several platforms such as Amazon, Be in Sport, Canal+, etc.
With this first step into the world of F1 and this foray into France, DAZN could be a serious competitor to the broadcasting of F1 in France after 2029.
