While Hamilton held the lead at the start of the race, Rosberg suffered a poorly controlled attack from Vettel, which condemned him to restart in last place at the end of the first corner. Just as the German was moving up the field, his British team-mate suffered an engine failure in the final third of the race, forcing him to retire. At the chequered flag, Rosberg salvaged 3rd place and took the lead in the drivers' championship.

The second session was quieter in the early afternoon local time. The drivers got a taste of the conditions they'll have to contend with on Sunday, with Lewis Hamilton coming out on top against Nico Rosberg by 2 tenths. Ferrari seemed more at ease than Red Bull on the Malaysian circuit, and Alonso confirmed the Honda engine's improvement.

The weather was fine and very hot in Sepang for this first session. Mercedes dominated, with Nico Rosberg more at ease, while the Ferrari seemed to be in better form than the Red Bull in Malaysia. Despite Vettel's setback in qualifying, the Scuderia showed its strength in the race. Räikkönen battled with Hamilton for the last step of the podium before losing out, and Vettel was voted driver of the day, finishing 5th after a wild comeback from last place.

The bright night of Marina Bay was the setting for Nico Rosberg's convincing pole position. Mercedes dominated proceedings overall, but Red Bull could be satisfied with Daniel Ricciardo's second place, ahead of Lewis Hamilton! Sebastian Vettel was unable to defend his chances, due to a faulty anti-roll bar.

The night session saw the big guns battle it out for the fastest time. Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull were all within a few tenths of each other, with the notable exception of Lewis Hamilton, who was forced to shorten his session due to hydraulic problems. This time, the ultra-tendres showed interesting potential. Also of note was Grosjean's serious off-track excursion midway through the session.

As usual, the first free practice session took place on Friday morning. Once again this weekend, the Halo is being tested by a handful of drivers, as are the prototype Pirelli tires for everyone else. Not surprisingly, the Mercedes engine gave the German team a clear advantage, with Rosberg setting the fastest time. Ferrari seems to be struggling a little on its home turf.
