Sunday: « A very strong result » for Red Bull

Sebastian Vettel will not secure a 5th consecutive victory! After a poor start, the German driver lost the race due to a bad strategic choice, while his teammate, after a phenomenal comeback, snatched an unexpected first podium finish following a disastrous qualification. Although the victory slipped away from Red Bull, the Austrian team remains comfortably at the top of both standings.

Sebastian Vettel – 2nd

« My start wasn’t the best, and it seems that the left side of the grid is worse here than the right side. It wasn’t brilliant, and I lost positions to Jenson and Lewis. After that, I had to be patient. I think we managed the tires better at the end of the first stint; we could have stayed on track, but there was no reason to at that moment, so I pitted and came out in the lead. It was surprising to see Jenson pass through my pit box in front of me. Something similar happened two years ago with a Toro Rosso; I don’t know what attracts them to our garage. Fortunately, it had no impact, and the guys kept their cool. We came out in the lead and pushed hard to stick to a two-stop strategy. The second stint was supposed to be a bit longer, but at the end of the race, I found myself on hard tires, and I could see Lewis getting closer. I tried to defend my position as much as possible without giving up too much time to the guys behind, but [Lewis] found a gap. It was a tough race, and we made a few mistakes, but we still finished second and third, which is a solid result. Congratulations to Lewis and McLaren; they did a great job, and it shows that in a race, if you try something different and make a small mistake, there will be someone to beat you. It was a good race for us, and we can learn a lot. Mark had a good race and a good pace. With two stops, you need to be patient and take care of your tires, but it didn’t work.

Mark Webber – 3rd

« We had decided to start on hard tires, which we knew were not the most desired. So we got rid of them, but it was actually quite tricky because even with the guys I was with, everyone was using the DRS at the same time. I made a mistake in turn 2 on my in-lap to the pits, then we came in when there wasn’t much left to get from the tires and our race could begin. Seeing ’17th place’ on the board after 15 laps, you might lose faith, but suddenly I felt better with the car. I had a few sets of tires left from qualifying so that helped, and maybe that’s the right strategy. But, more seriously, I think the guys did a fantastic job […]. I drove for them today and for everyone at the factory. Congratulations to Lewis and it’s still a good result for us today. »

Christian Horner

« After losing some ground at the start by ending up behind the two McLarens, we decided to put Sebastian on a two-stop strategy. It almost paid off and it was just four laps close, but ultimately, he just didn’t have enough grip left to defend. The second place is still a fantastic result and represents a lot of points that are well-deserved. With Mark, we effectively did the race backwards by putting on hard tires first and going for a 3-stop strategy. It’s a phenomenal comeback on his part to end up on the podium […]. We had a bit of a scare when Jenson stopped in our garage during the first pit stop but, overall, it’s a very solid result for the team. »
