As we announced to you yesterday, Fernando Alonso has extended his contract with Ferrari until 2016. Just a few weeks ago, it was the Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel, who extended his contract with the Austrian team until 2014, but who nevertheless did not rule out the possibility of driving for the Rossa someday.

A few weeks ago, the native of Heppenheim stated in an interview with Autosprint: « For me, Ferrari is a legend and one day, it would be an honor to have my name on the list of great Ferrari drivers. But that doesn’t mean I want to go there right away, I’m happy where I am and that’s why I renewed [until 2014]. »

But won’t the extension of the Spaniard’s contract beyond 2012 – the initial term of Alonso’s contract signed at the end of 2009 with the Scuderia – risk blocking a possible transfer of the youngest world champion to Maranello after 2014? “I don’t think I’ve ever said that the fact Fernando or Felipe, or any other driver, is committed to Ferrari means it’s impossible to go there,” he states before adding, “As far as I know, a Formula One team has two seats…”

Sebastian Vettel does not rule out having his 2010 season rival as a teammate, which could form an exceptional lineup, especially since both drivers will be able to further enrich their respective records by then.

But, as he has already mentioned on numerous occasions, the young German is not projecting himself that far ahead: « I don’t really think about these kinds of things, and I don’t ask myself where I would be in 2016. It’s quite far away. Really, I’d go step by step, race by race, so next year is already far, and 2013… don’t talk to me about it, with the new rules, so many things can happen. »

We indeed remember that the German had waited for the main Red Bull executives to renew their contracts, starting with Adrian Newey, to renew his own contract: « I think all drivers feel roughly the same way: if you are in an environment where you feel welcome, you feel good with the team and the guys. »

And Vettel, therefore, to remind us, at the risk of making headlines, that he feels good where he is, and to congratulate Fernando Alonso: “It’s good for him, congratulations. I think it’s an important step. […] If he had the opportunity and feels good there, then why not?”
