Sergio Perez has withdrawn from the race after complaining of nausea following Free Practice 1. The Sauber driver had indeed been involved in a major accident at the exit of the tunnel, fifteen days ago in Monaco: « Of course, I wanted to drive and I was sure I was fine. But apparently, unfortunately, that’s not the case. I am deeply disappointed. I spoke to the team after the first session and told them I wasn’t at 100%. I only want to drive when I feel 100% fine. I need more time to recover. »

This last-minute package took Peter Sauber by surprise, as the Mexican driver had passed all the necessary medical tests: « This took us by surprise because Sergio had undergone medical examinations, first at the hospital in Monaco, then in Zurich, and finally, the FIA doctors gave him the green light on Thursday in Montreal. No one could anticipate that he would feel unwell. Maybe we are being too cautious, but when it comes to the drivers’ health, we take no risks. »

The Swiss team has therefore decided to call on Pedro de la Rosa, the third driver for the McLaren-Mercedes team, the Spaniard already familiar with the setup, having spent a good part of last season there: « We would like to thank Pedro de la Rosa and McLaren for their help. »
