Friday: We are not in bed at Virgin

After Jérôme d'Ambrosio's accident during Free Practice 2, the mechanics of the British team will have to change the chassis of the Belgian's MVR-02. The frequent red flags and this accident disrupted Virgin's program, which is hoping for better days ahead.

I would say it was rather a crash fest today, and it somewhat hindered our program, especially during the second session. This morning, we were just trying to assess low downforce levels, and I think we have enough data to work on good setups for the rest of the weekend.

The second session was devoted to understanding tire behavior here on a long stint. Unfortunately, because of the red flags, we weren’t able to complete a full stint as such, and I had to hurry to accomplish at least one stint with the super soft tires.

The weather could play its role in what could be an interesting end to the weekend, so I think we can expect an exciting race.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio – 21st & 24th

The day went quite well today. I had good feelings with the car and really enjoyed driving here. However, then I made a mistake at turn 3 that sent me wide onto the curb at turn 4. I couldn’t get back on track so I ended up in the wall.

It’s a shame to end the day this way, but I was happy with the car’s performance on the track, so I’m sure we can bounce back tomorrow. I’m just really sorry for the team as the guys have a lot of work to do tonight.

John Booth, Team Principal

« It was a particularly difficult start to the weekend, and as a result, the mechanics and engineers will have a long evening ahead of them to get us back on track.

Unfortunately, Jérôme’s accident will require changing the chassis due to damage to the nose fixings, and it’s a big job that will keep us working late into the night.

[…] Nevertheless, it is clear that we must make the most of the data we have and try to improve the car by tomorrow. »
