Sunday: Good race for Virgin

In difficulty during the qualifications, the Virgins held strong in the race and even afforded the luxury of overtaking a Lotus.

Jérome D’Ambrosio – 15th

It was an incredible race. We were in race mode for four hours. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was something special. There were lots of ups and downs: before the red flag, I stopped twice and then suddenly, after the restart, I found myself racing with Timo and I thought, “What’s happening?” It was crazy! On the last restart, I lost a lot of time with the blue flags, I had to go onto the wet line to let others pass and, in the end, I couldn’t fight for positions because with the rain setup, I didn’t have the same top speed. But it was a great race and a very good experience for me.

Timo Glock – 16th

It was an unusual and difficult race. I think it’s one of the longest races I have ever run! It’s a bit of a shame, in the last part of the GP, I had a good pace and managed to catch up with Trulli and pass him, but then I locked my wheels and made a big flat spot on my tires, which cost me a lot. I couldn’t go very fast on the straights because of the vibrations, so when Karthikeyan got behind me in the 67th lap, I tried to hold on but he attempted a maneuver in the last corner and pushed me off the track. He short-circuited the chicane when he passed me and Jerome took advantage of this incident too. In the last lap, there was nothing I could do because the tires were completely worn out.

John Booth

A race that was anything but uneventful and which played to our advantage given the level of aerodynamic support we had chosen to implement. With Timo, we were on edge in the first part of the race because we were waiting for the rain that was showing up on our radar, and we estimated that stopping to put on intermediates would have been too costly. It turned out to be a good decision since Timo was in 15th place at the time of the restart. The second part of Timo’s race did not start well, as he lost places when he stopped to put on intermediates, but thanks to the stop to mount the slicks, he managed to overtake Trulli. Unfortunately, during the last part of the race under the safety car, we detected a flat on the wheel and warned Timo, but given his position, we had to try to finish the race as a new stop would have dropped us to the last place. Jérôme had a rollercoaster race: he started last and finished 14th (editor’s note: 15th in reality). He did a good job given the events of this weekend. We used him, at certain times, to try strategies with the intermediates and, even with that, he managed to achieve a good result. All credit goes to him.
