Almost no one sees the title slipping away from Vettel

According to several figures in the paddock, Sebastian Vettel would have to make quite an effort to lose the title.

With six wins to his name in eight races, Sebastian Vettel is soaring towards his second world championship title, and for some, it’s no longer a question of if he will become champion, but when.

For Jacques Villeneuve, this year, definitely, the favorite is Vettel. He will win very easily unless he does something stupid. His car is incredible, and he has a very solid team. Everyone is behind him, the mechanics, the sponsors, a great car. When things happen like this, when you’re on your cloud, nothing can go wrong.

The Quebecer, however, sees a glimmer of hope for the competition: « He is super fast. This year, his speed has improved, but the only time he was under pressure, in Montreal, he cracked. He collapsed. It was an easy race, it was won, and he collapsed. So, it hasn’t changed since last year. »

According to Ross Brawn, it would be very strange if Sebastian did not win the championship. He has a very good car, he drives fantastically, it’s hard to imagine why he wouldn’t.

According to the Mercedes team manager, the new regulations on blown exhausts, which Red Bull is expected to suffer from first, should not affect the German team’s chances of securing a second consecutive world crown: « I think most teams will lose something, but I doubt it will be decisive and I don’t believe it will change the hierarchy. All the top teams will work hard to regain the lost performance. »

On his part, Felipe Massa remains realistic: Sebastian Vettel would really have to slip up to lose the title. »

The fact remains that Vettel’s almost unchallenged domination doesn’t really bother Bernie Ecclestone: « Sebastian is in the same position that Michael Schumacher was. He is the best at the moment and that’s why he dominates, and that’s what makes him so interesting for the fans, because every weekend starts with a big question mark: « Who can beat Vettel? ». That’s why the fans continue to follow F1. »

The Briton sees no reason why there shouldn’t be a Red Bull era just like there was a Ferrari era with Michael Schumacher. He is not the only one to draw a parallel between the two German drivers and their respective teams: Ferrari set new standards when they went through three years without mechanical problems, explains Nigel Mansell. Michael won three world championship titles and people said it was thanks to reliability more than anything else. Today, Red Bull is setting its own standard, so what can you do when everything is done to perfection?

The 1992 World Champion, however, does not think that Vettel should rest on his laurels: « I was three times vice-world champion [editor’s note: « maid of honor » in the original text], and I lost the championship by one point in the last race. »

With Lewis Hamilton, who reflected on his statements after the European Grand Prix where he claimed that the title was really over, only Mark Webber seemed to maintain, in the Daily Express, hope for the 2011 world championship title: It’s still possible for me to win the title, but it will be very tough. The next four or five races will be important, so the momentum can change things. There’s only one guy who can really be happy with his season so far, and that’s Seb.
