Button and Hamilton: the new Prost and Senna?

In harmony for a season and a half at McLaren, the two drivers of Her Majesty certainly form the most complete duo in Formula 1, particularly according to John Watson. It is inevitable, therefore, to avoid any possible comparison with Senna and Prost, which Jenson Button does not deny.

Author of a statement on Hamilton’s behavior a few days ago, calling on the McLaren driver to “relax,” John Watson, former McLaren driver, this time expressed his thoughts on the TalkSport Radio about the duo formed by the two Brits within the Woking team.

And the least we can say is that, for Watson, it is elementary that Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton make a pair: « Lewis is aggressive while Jenson brings maturity and stability to the team. There is a perfect balance between the two drivers: passion for Lewis and perspective for Jenson. Together, they form a great team ». A harmonious partnership that has already brought nine victories to McLaren since 2010 and many thrilling battles for Formula 1 fans.

Winners of two Grand Prix each since the start of the season, in very different styles, Button and Hamilton inevitably evoke memories of the ultimate alliance formed by Ron Dennis at McLaren composed of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. However, it’s difficult to draw further similarities, as the rivalry between the Brazilian and the Frenchman had extended far beyond the race track, significantly impacting their personal relationships.

A comparison that doesn’t displease Jenson Button, a great admirer of the Frenchman: « I quite agree with that. I like these comparisons. Ayrton was perhaps faster over a single lap, but Alain won races differently. He could be the fastest over a race distance because he took care of his car and his tires. He knew how you needed to be in the rhythm until the sixtieth lap, when the checkered flag was waved, not just until the thirtieth lap ».

Asked about his driving style, especially in Canada where he had to fight hard for victory after clashes with Hamilton and Alonso and two legendary final laps against Vettel, Button says: « I wasn’t more aggressive than usual. For me, it was exactly like all the victories I’ve had. Don’t you think? I was in a situation where I could exploit the positive aspects, but I didn’t change my style at all. It was exactly like usual ».

It’s funny, but I haven’t had many fights with Sebastian Vettel. The Brit also talks about the pressure that might weigh on the shoulders of the reigning champion, who hasn’t won for three Grand Prix while leading the championship, a situation Button experienced with Brawn GP in 2009: He has less pressure than I do. He has already won the title, that’s very important. You don’t feel as much pressure when you’ve already done it.
