Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton want to believe

Far from the untouchable Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull, the McLaren drivers want to remain optimistic and hope to capitalize on their car's performance. One objective: close the gap.

Recent winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, his second victory of the season, Jenson Button is 100 points behind Sebastian Vettel. However, the Briton claims he will continue to fight to close this gap, or should I say, this chasm. “I am 100 points behind, it will be difficult, but we love challenges. I never give up, so let’s wait and see what happens. I will take each race as it comes and then look at the points at the end of the year.”

World champion in 2009 at the wheel of a very competitive Brawn GP at the beginning of the season (five wins in the first nine GPs), then facing more challenges, forcing him to play strategically to maintain his lead against the return of Barrichello, his teammate, and especially Sebastian Vettel, who finished just 11 points behind (equivalent to a victory and an 8th place at the time) after being 32 points behind (more than three victories), Jenson Button is certainly hoping for a similar scenario.

He wants to be clear-eyed but optimistic: Our race pace was very strong [in Germany], but I don’t think there was a big gap between Ferrari, Red Bull, and us. We’ve won three of the last five races, and our rivals only one each, so we’re doing something right. For Button, these victories are a real eye-opener. Winning with Lewis in Germany and with me in Hungary proves that McLaren is working, developing, and competing with the others.

As for Lewis Hamilton, who is currently 88 points behind Vettel (with three victories and one third place), the goal is clearly to rack up wins. « There are 200 points left to contend for, and I’m going to approach each race thinking I can win them. We’re heading to some really special locations: Spa, Monza, Suzuka, and Interlagos are among the greatest circuits in the sport. You really feel their soul and history ». He anticipates a spectacular end to the season: « We will go to these Grand Prix with three teams battling, all on the same pace: it’s going to be a spectacular and competitive sprint to the end of the season ».
