After announcing that hard tires would not be part of the selection during the next three Grand Prix, Paul Hembery stated that it would be unlikely for this compound to return: “I don’t think we are going to see the hard tire again. I think it’s probably too hard and the medium tire is robust enough for the abrasive circuits ahead.”

A decision that could indirectly allow teams that struggle more with hard tires, like Ferrari, to be more confident in the future. The 150° Italia indeed adapts better to soft tires; this, combined with the technical improvements of the Maranello car, should allow Scuderia to stay competitive in each remaining race. More broadly, the spectacle should be exciting and encourage bold strategies.

Hembery also talks about 2012: « Without a doubt, next season, the mediums will become the hards. We will probably insert something between the current softs and mediums. We want to maintain a one-second gap between each type. The gap between the super softs and the softs is about right because you have a one-second advantage, but you clearly have degradation and a limitation in usage. If we could replicate this with the new medium and hard tires, I think we would be on the right track ».

Regarding the use of different tire compounds at each race: « I think we have to do it, because the circuits we visit are really different. It will only be on the street circuits where there will be many similarities. Singapore has added the question mark of rain, night, with 40°C temperature, which is a strange situation to experience, so I think it will be fascinating ». The head of Pirelli Sport added: « I believe we will have other interesting scenarios [during the races] ».

To conclude, a little self-satisfaction: « Pirelli must be thrilled. I think Pirelli has done a good job. We had little time to be ready, limited opportunities to conduct tests, but despite all these constraints, I believe we delivered an excellent product and added something to the F1 spectacle ».
