The team Team Lotus decided at the end of 2010 to leave Cosworth to turn to Renault for the engine supply of its single-seaters. The signed contract covered the 2011 and 2012 seasons. However, both parties reached an agreement until the end of the 2013 season – which marks the end of the V8 in Formula 1, with the aim of continuing in 2014 with the introduction of V6 engines.

The team led by Tony Fernandes has also signed a partnership with Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology to use the KERS utilized by the Red Bull Racing team. The Team Lotus already has the Red Bull gearbox since the beginning of the season, so this agreement on the KERS is a logical continuation.

Having established an incredible working partnership since the early days of our agreement, we are absolutely delighted that Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology will play such a role in the ongoing development of our team until the end of 2013, and then we aim to continue together when the new regulations are introduced, Tony Fernandes stated.

These are both passionate structures with whom we have growing relationships, which offer a number of opportunities for us in the future. They share our vision of where we want to take the team, and we are very proud to have them with us.

«We will not only be able to build on everything we have learned from working with Renault and Red Bull Technology in 2011, but we will now be able to add the benefit of KERS for next year, which is truly an important step forward for our team. We have given our best this year but without that little extra power, we are still racing at a different level from the teams ahead of us, so providing our drivers with this extra is a key element to help us catch up with the cars in front of us and thus compete with them.»

On the Red Bull side, Christian Horner – the director of the Red Bull Racing team – expressed his delight to continue the partnership with Tony Fernandes’ team regarding the supply of the gearbox and, from next year, the KERS.

«We are very pleased to extend the partnership between Red Bull Technology and Team Lotus, which already uses our gearbox, to include KERS for 2012 and beyond. This strengthens the collaboration established between Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology, which will continue to develop in the coming months. Hopefully, this will allow Team Lotus to consolidate the progress made this season, » said Christian Horner.
