The young Mexican driver is only in his first Formula 1 season, but he has already made quite a name for himself.

One of the most memorable images of the season will undoubtedly be his terrible accident during the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying. A crash after the tunnel turn that was reminiscent of Karl Wendlinger’s in 1994, which had led the Austrian driver to serious injuries and a sudden end to his Formula 1 career.

Fortunately, Sergio Pérez fared much better and has since demonstrated driving skills that have not gone unnoticed by Ferrari’s management.

Indeed, the Mexican is part of the Scuderia’s young driver program, and Stefano Domenicali keeps a watchful eye on his progress. Evidence of this is the recent testing done by Pérez and Bianchi (one of the French drivers present in GP2 and also part of the Ferrari “Junior Team”).

If the Italian boss only admits it half-heartedly, he remains convinced that a young driver deserves his chance in a Ferrari: «Ferrari cannot have two young drivers racing as main drivers. That would represent too much pressure for them. But a pairing between a young driver and a more experienced driver could be interesting, and they could complement each other perfectly.»

Visibly, Domenicali has already looked into the question of Pérez, but he does not want to give him his chance too quickly for fear of burning his wings: Sergio is under contract with Sauber. Let’s allow him to continue to grow and have a good 2012 season.

It is known that Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso’s current teammate, is no longer part of Scuderia’s plans beyond 2012. Therefore, there is a great opportunity for a young driver to take his place. As of now, Pérez seems to be the best positioned.
