Austin is set to host Formula 1 from 2012 onwards at the brand new Circuit of the Americas, built specifically for the event. The site has been chosen and clearing work has already begun – as you can see in the Red Bull video below. However, no buildings have yet emerged from the ground even though the race is scheduled to take place in just over a year.

According to a local newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman, construction on the circuit site has dramatically slowed down for several weeks now, even though it has never completely stopped. Also according to this newspaper, the construction of the various access roads is not expected to be completed before the end of October. And the building construction would depend on the construction of the access roads, which means that building construction will not be able to start before early December — less than a year before the race.

Formula 1 has been visiting new countries for several years with varying degrees of success – construction deadlines can go very well, as seen in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, or Turkey, or less well, as in South Korea, for example. Let us hope for the United States that it goes better and that the circuit receives FIA approval for the return of F1 to the United States at the end of 2012.
