Alonso aims for the runner-up spot
Fernando Alonso is no longer in the running for the title—only Vettel and Button are still in contention—but the Ferrari driver would like to finish in second place in the drivers' championship because he believes it would be a significant achievement in itself.

This is still not the year Fernando Alonso will be able to win the title with Scuderia Ferrari, but the double world champion Spaniard does not want to finish the season coasting. Alonso believes the second place in the drivers’ championship is within his reach, and he intends to fight against Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, and Jenson Button to surpass them by the end of the last Grand Prix of the season, which will take place in Brazil.
Even though it is true that we are no longer mathematically in contention for the driver’s title, there are many reasons to stay motivated for the last five races of the season with the right attitude. Firstly, there is the second place in the drivers’ championship. Given the way the season has unfolded, with a dominant Vettel missing the podium only once (in Germany), being vice-champion would really be a great result for the team and for me. There are still four of us in the running, I am competing against Webber and the two McLaren drivers, and I believe we will have to wait until Interlagos to know who will get that place, Fernando Alonso shared on his blog.
Alonso believes he has every chance even though he admits that his car is probably inferior to the McLaren and Red Bull, but anything can happen in a race, and that’s why he intends to fight until the last race.
Clearly, if we look at the way the last races went, it won’t be easy, because my closest rivals seem to have that little extra in terms of performance with their cars, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause. We know we have to do things perfectly to reach our goal and we will try until the end.
The Iberian driver also believes that second place in the Constructors’ Championship is a possible goal for Scuderia Ferrari, even though the Italian team is currently 85 points behind McLaren, who hold the second position.
And there is also the second place in the constructors’ championship, but it is a more difficult goal because there is a significant gap with McLaren, but it is not impossible. Ultimately, the team and I simply want to finish the season as best as possible, which did not go as we had hoped.
In order to thank the entire Ferrari team, Alonso would like to secure at least one victory in these last races. He also hopes to be able to regularly fight for a podium place in the absence of victories.
