Team Lotus, LRGP, and Virgin will be able to change their names

The Formula 1 Commission has approved the requests for name changes from the teams Lotus Renault Grand Prix, Team Lotus, and Marussia Virgin Racing. However, these changes will need to be confirmed during a vote at the World Motor Sport Council on December 7th.

The Formula 1 Commission – composed of the directors of the 12 teams, Grand Prix promoters, sponsors, engine manufacturers, a representative from Pirelli, Bernie Ecclestone, and Jean Todt – met today in Geneva to rule on various issues.

For the moment, the only leaked information relates to the requests for name changes made by the Lotus Renault Grand Prix teams, Team Lotus to end the double Lotus name in Formula 1, and also the request made by Marussia.

These three teams should be able to change their names. In 2012, Lotus Renault GP should simply become Lotus, Team Lotus will become Caterham, and Marussia Virgin Racing will become Marussia.

For the moment, although the Formula 1 Commission has shown support for these name changes, things will need to be ratified during a vote at the World Motor Sport Council, whose next meeting is scheduled for December 7.
