Slim Domit pushes for a return of the Mexican Grand Prix
Mexico made its return to the F1 grid in 2011 with the arrival of Sergio Perez at Sauber. The driver is largely supported by Telmex, owned by the world's richest man, Carlos Slim. The latter's son, Slim Domit, is now advocating for his country to regain a place on the F1 calendar.

The businessman therefore reminded FIA in Motion magazine of the long history that ties the country to the discipline as well as the opportunities that are opening up: « Mexico has long been connected to Formula 1, much more so than with many other car series that have come to the country. The emergence of a new generation of Mexican drivers has only served to reinforce interest in Formula 1. We not only have Sergio Perez impressing at Sauber, but also another potential star, Esteban Gutierrez. He is a rising Formula 1 star. The potential of these young drivers has reignited interest in F1 beyond the hardcore fans. The large crowd that gathered to see Perez’s F1 demonstration in his hometown earlier this year proves the renewed popularity of the sport, on which we must capitalize. »
The idea would be to link the Mexican event with those in North America to limit travel and time changes for the entire Formula 1 caravan: Linking the races in Canada and the United States with a stage in Mexico would perfectly consolidate Formula 1’s footprint in North and Central America and provide a bridge to the race in Brazil. There are many choices for a new circuit, with the country’s second city, Guadalajara, which recently hosted the very beautiful Pan-American Games, being a very interesting option. Cancun, with its superb infrastructure, also remains a possibility. In fact, there is no shortage of potential cities or capable promoters.
The only problem with linking both the Canadian and United States events with those in Brazil is that they are not at all at the same time on the calendar. Indeed, Canada (and New Jersey starting in 2013) is scheduled for June, while Austin and Brazil are in November. It seems difficult to change this state of affairs since June is already very hot in Texas, while Montreal is often under snow in November…
