Robert Kubica breaks his leg again

Lotus had already assessed that its driver Robert Kubica would not be ready for the start of the season, which led to the recruitment of Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean. This decision proved to be the right one as the Pole had to return to the hospital for a broken leg.

Eleven months ago, Lotus’s number one driver suffered numerous fractures due to a serious rally accident. One of his fractures was on his right tibia. It seems today that the driver has reopened this fracture by slipping on a patch of ice near his Italian home in Pietrasanta.

Even if no official statement corroborates this information, Robert Kubica is said to have been transferred to the hospital in Viareggio, where he was admitted last year right after his accident. However, he had stated at the end of December that he was parting ways with his doctor, Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli. If this information were unfortunately to be confirmed, it would mean that the Polish driver’s fractures were not yet fully healed and that a possible return to driving an F1 was still far off.

As revealed by Autosport, this fracture reportedly occurred on the same day Stefano Domenicali made statements in which the Scuderia’s leader denied the rumors of in-season tests for Robert Kubica to replace Felipe Massa: This wasn’t part of our plans. Obviously, Robert Kubica is a great driver who has had very serious injuries and is currently working very hard to get back to his normal life. So before discussing anything, we need to wait and see what happens. Of course, this kind of injury takes a long time to recover from. So I can say that we will wait to see if he recovers, but for now, nothing is set.

It is therefore even more likely that the Scuderia will take even more time before committing to a driver who is unlikely to ever be able to make a comeback to their best form.
