Alguersuari refused to be the third Red Bull driver
Jaime Alguersuari could have been hired as a reserve driver for the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams in 2012, but the Catalan driver turned down the offer.

Sébastien Buemi was confirmed as the third driver for the Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso teams a few days ago, but Adrian Newey, the technical director of the double world champion team, revealed that the Swiss driver was not Red Bull’s first choice.
The position of third driver was initially offered to Jaime Alguersuari. However, he reportedly declined it as he was not pleased with being ousted from his role as a main driver within the Toro Rosso team for 2012, in favor of Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo.
After Alguersuari refused to join our team, we reached an agreement with Sébastien Buemi to be our reserve driver, said Adrian Newey to Mundo Deportivo.
After also ruling out the possibility of joining HRT for 2012, Alguersuari is reportedly in talks with several major teams to become their reserve driver. According to the Spanish press, he is in discussions with McLaren – which lost Pedro de la Rosa – and with Mercedes AMG.
