Mike Gascoyne becomes Chief Technical Officer of Caterham Group

By acquiring Caterham, Tony Fernandes has not only found a solution to the conflict with Lotus Group but also got his hands on a full-fledged manufacturer. He has just decided to appoint Mike Gascoyne as the technical director for all activities of his automotive division.

The British engineer has been involved from the start of the adventure with this new team, which has had three different names in as many seasons of existence. After two initial seasons of learning, finishing in tenth place in the championship and securing significant television revenue, the team will be able to benefit from a stable technical structure as Caterham retains its Renault engine block and the technical regulations have changed very little.

Mike Gascoyne will therefore be able to take a broader perspective by overseeing all technical activities and developments of Caterham Group, from motorsports (F1 and also GP2) to road vehicle manufacturing, including composite materials from Caterham Composites and the research at Caterham Technology & Innovation.

It is therefore a true global strategy that is being implemented within the group, which will help strengthen the efficiency of already initiated projects but will also open up new prospects for new fields of application. This means that Mark Smith will now be overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Formula 1 team. The two men will thus complement each other in their presence on the circuits for the 2012 season.

The main person involved states: “Mark Smith is exactly the right person to be appointed to the expanded role he will now occupy within the F1 team. I look forward to working even more with Mark Edwards at Caterham Technology & Innovation, Phil Hall at Caterham Composites, and Ansar Ali at Caterham Cars.”
