It’s not a surprise to hear rumors about a possible arrival of Sergio Perez at Ferrari as a main driver. The Mexican driver is part of the Scuderia’s Young Driver Academy, and his main sponsor, Telmex, finances a significant portion of the budget for the Sauber team, powered by… Ferrari.

This close association between Perez, Telmex, and Ferrari leads Carlos Slim Domit to say that the Mexican driver would have every chance of being appointed to the Scuderia as early as next year: It is true that there is a two-level relationship with Ferrari. Firstly, by being an engine supplier for Sauber, and secondly because Sergio is part of the Scuderia’s Young Driver Academy. A good 2012 championship could put him in a good position with the best teams. But a bad year could have the opposite effect as well.

However, he remains balanced and refocuses Perez on his main objective: « His most important challenge remains this season. It’s a tough sport where results matter. We will have a clearer view during the year. »
