Keke Rosberg supports the “small” teams
Keke Rosberg, world champion in 1982 and father of current Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg, is a supporter of small teams like Caterham, Marussia, or HRT.

The Finnish champion is lenient with the new teams that have joined the championship since 2010. He is even a strong supporter of Caterham and the competition between Marussia and HRT. For him, these teams need time to develop: « You’ve got to start somewhere. You can’t debut and become Ferrari directly. There is a need for small teams. Otherwise, there would only be Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull on the grid. You need big teams, mid-field teams, and small teams. I hope that one day these smaller teams can develop and become big teams. Remember Stewart, which became Jaguar and finally Red Bull. »
According to Keke Rosberg, Caterham could well make progress this year to reach the middle of the grid: « They will probably be a notch above what they were last season. And not only because they will have the KERS. They should reduce the gap with Williams and Force India. »
Despite everything, the next move of the Caterham team to another factory could be a big distraction according to the Finn who adds: “It’s not just about moving a few machines, but hundreds of people, with their children, schooling problems, etc… We’ll have to see how they will cope with all that.”
But the 1982 world champion also has his opinion on other current Formula 1 issues, such as the idea put forward by Ferrari that smaller teams should give up building their own chassis to buy single-seaters from the previous year from other manufacturers.
For him, this proposal is ridiculous: « Imagine a Ferrari half a second faster than the competition. We would end up with half the grid on Ferraris fighting among themselves, all ahead of the others. And then, for example, this year, with the modification concerning the noses of the cars, it means you can’t use last year’s cars. Formula 1 has always been a discipline where each team builds its own car. Otherwise, it would be like GP2 with lots of Ferraris. »
