Jaime Alguersuari becomes a BBC commentator

This is not necessarily what he had in mind when he said he wanted to stay in Formula 1, but it still allows him to attend the 20 races: Jaime Alguersuari has just landed a new role in F1, as a commentator for the BBC alongside James Allen.

The Spaniard found himself unemployed following his dismissal from Toro Rosso, where he had raced for two and a half seasons. He did not even have the same opportunity as his former teammate, Sébastien Buemi, who has since been appointed third driver for Red Bull’s parent team.

The BBC has therefore taken the opportunity to add an experienced driver to its lineup of commentators as British television has suffered the departure of a significant portion of its staff (including star commentator Martin Brundle) following the agreement made with Sky. The young driver will therefore work on the live broadcast for BB5 radio.

Nevertheless, he does not lose hope of finding a permanent seat in the near future, as acknowledged by Adrian van Klaveren, the head of live broadcasting: «We are thrilled to have Jaime with us. His personality makes him a great asset for the 5’s F1 live coverage for the 2012 season. We will make the most of Jaime’s firsthand experience, knowing he could be driving again for one of the teams in the near future.»

Many drivers have transitioned to commentator roles when they found themselves without a seat, like Franck Montagny in France. Let’s hope this doesn’t mean the end of a career that has barely started since the Spaniard is only… 21 years old.
