$15 million worth of work needed in Montreal

While there are still two years left before the end of its contract, Montreal is already under pressure from Bernie Ecclestone. Indeed, he is already suggesting a figure of 15 million dollars in work as a prerequisite for any extension negotiations.

The British magnate thus demands that the local authorities bring the reception infrastructures of the Circuit de l’Ile Notre-Dame up to international standards, as they are starting to show their age. François Dumontier, president of Octane Racing Group, appointed to organize the Grand Prix, declared to La Presse: “Given that the circuit’s equipment, notably the control tower and the garages, are nearly 25 years old, it is more than likely that their refurbishment will be an important element in the negotiations.”

Montreal is, in fact, a semi-permanent circuit: while the track and stands are assembled and dismantled for each event, the hospitality areas of the Formula One Circus are fixed. They are thus exposed to the city’s extreme weather conditions.

Nevertheless, the game is worth the candle as the current negotiations are for a duration of 10 years, covering the period from 2014 to 2024. While everyone agrees on the need for the works, the question arises regarding the distribution of funding among the different parties involved, namely the federal government of Ottawa, the government of Quebec, the Montreal tourism office, and the City of Montreal.

The minister responsible for Montreal, Raymond Bachand, stated: « The good news is that there are ongoing discussions to extend Formula 1 in Montreal, Canada, for a good period of time. The 15 million required for the circuit renovation is justified. Mr. Ecclestone wants to ensure that the facilities are in good condition, which is normal. We need to find a way to finance this. »

These negotiations are taking place in a context where the Quebec city will no longer be the only destination in North America, with the arrival this year of Austin and next year of New Jersey. The costs for transporting tons of equipment could therefore be spread over at least two consecutive events.
