Peter Sauber is not in a hurry to retire

Although he had previously announced that he would not remain at the head of the team that bears his name beyond the age of 70, Peter Sauber seems a little less sure of himself today.

Peter Sauber, founder and director of the Swiss team Sauber, had declared last season: “I don’t want to be sitting on the pit wall with headphones on until I’m 70 years old.”

An important indication of his desire to withdraw from automotive competition after more than forty years of good and faithful service. But on the eve of his 70th birthday, which he will reach in October 2013, the Swiss leader seems a bit less sure of himself about his retirement.

His main wish was to stabilize his team after the sudden withdrawal of BMW, which owned the team from 2006 to 2009, before handing over to a team led by his own son, Alex Sauber, and Monisha Kaltenborn, the current CEO, who is often presented as the obvious successor to Peter Sauber.

Furthermore, with a driver like Sergio Pérez, who collects strong performances and podiums, Peter Sauber has met all the conditions he had set to be able to retire.

But his retirement does not seem so imminent. When the Austrian television channel Servus TV questions him on this subject, he says: « The exact date is not yet very clear in my mind. »

The love of racing and competition is still very much present in Peter Sauber’s genes as he adds: « Watching races on television would surely be the worst thing. »
