Saturday: 40 years after the first, McLaren celebrates its 150th pole position

Even though points are only awarded on Sunday, history is also written on Saturday. By dominating the three phases of the qualifications, Lewis Hamilton secured McLaren's 150th pole position in its Formula 1 history. His teammate is not far behind, with Jenson Button managing to secure 4th position despite very challenging Free Practice sessions for the 2009 World Champion.

Lewis Hamilton – 2nd and Pole Position:

« I am really happy! It’s been a really good weekend so far. After Jenson was able to demonstrate our car’s pace at the last Grand Prix in Hockenheim, for us, it’s just great to come to Budapest and be “on point.” However, it was tough this afternoon, but I really enjoyed every lap and the support from the spectators was absolutely phenomenal. So, I want to say a big “thank you” to all the fans.

Our updates are working. Jenson and I always want more speed – it’s natural for any racing driver – but the guys in Woking and here in Budapest have done a brilliant job. Our car is now fantastic. We’ve been fine-tuning the settings all weekend. Believe me: as long as we stay completely focused on developing our car and achieving good results, then anything is possible for us this year.

My feeling is that the start of the race will be extremely important. I really hope I can get away cleanly and stay ahead by preserving the tires.

I am told that this is the 150th pole position in McLaren’s history. It’s truly a fantastic accomplishment. I am extremely proud to be able to contribute to the success of such a great team, especially since I met Ron [Dennis] for the first time when I was 10 years old. I remember it very well. I told Ron that one day I wanted to race for his team. And here we are today. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s race!

Jenson Button – 10th and 4th:

« I was much happier with the car in qualifying than during Free Practice. I was obviously not as happy as Lewis – he did a superb job today, so kudos to him – but all in all, I feel good.

It’s a shame to have narrowly missed 3rd place at the end of Q3, because the odd-numbered grid spots are a bit cleaner than the even ones. If I had stayed in 3rd, it would have been easier to get a good start tomorrow. But 4th isn’t so bad.

As I said after testing yesterday, being fast here is a matter of perfect balance. I think today proved it. I didn’t manage to achieve that perfect balance this afternoon, but Lewis clearly did.

In fact, I think that Lewis’s performance shows our true pace.
