This year, Sauber has made a real leap forward in terms of performance. Thanks to the three podiums achieved by Sergio Pérez, the Swiss team already has 100 points, which is 66 more than the total for last season, and this with seven races remaining in the championship.

Here are the numbers that justify the enthusiasm of Monisha Kaltenborn, the director of the team based in Hinwil: « We are working very efficiently. The improvements made in Barcelona and Silverstone on our cars have been a success. Our progress on the track has fully met our forecasts, which is the main concern of our engineers. And there is still much to see from this C31. »

Indeed, Sauber is not ready to stop its development this year. Being so close to victory is an added motivation, even if it must not disrupt the design of next season’s car, as Kaltenborn explains: We will bring another series of improvements for the upcoming races in Asia and at the same time, we continue to make progress in the development of next year’s car. It’s not the pace of development that matters, but its efficiency.

But for a team like Sauber, the aspect of financing is a major concern. The Swiss team does not have, of course, the same resources as the leading teams on the grid like Ferrari, McLaren, or Mercedes: « Here, the issue of costs clearly plays an essential role. The more resources you have, the more you can develop the car, and this is directly reflected in performance. »

Kaltenbron also admitted that the goal this year was to beat Mercedes and secure fifth place in the world championship: « After our excellent start to the season, many people predicted that it wouldn’t last for us. The reality, however, is that we are getting more and more good results, and I expect this to continue in the final third of the season. Before the season we said we wanted to significantly improve our position in the world championship. It’s an ambitious goal, but you need to set high standards. And I have full confidence in our team. »
