The sole tire manufacturer in Formula 1, Pirelli, has announced that teams will have the choice and opportunity to test the next tire specifications planned for 2013 during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, during Friday’s practice sessions.

Pirelli also indicated that the tire compounds planned for next season will be very different from those used this year. The first tests with these tires will not be possible before February, so it’s a great opportunity for the teams to evaluate them during the Friday session in Brazil.

Paul Hembery states on this subject: In the absence of tests until February, this will be a golden opportunity for the teams to evaluate our new tires while they are developing their cars for 2013. We just hope it won’t rain on Friday!

A great opportunity indeed, especially since Hembery confirms that the tires will be really different in 2013. An additional test day will not be too much to understand their functioning: « Both the compounds and the construction will be different, which means that the characteristics of the new tires will be modified, with a wider range of operation and some compounds that are slightly more aggressive. »

However, the tires that will be made available in Brazil will not be entirely similar to those that will be used in 2013, but they will be very close: « We still need to finalize certain things, which is why we refer to the tire to be used in Brazil as a « prototype » rather than giving it a specific denomination, but it will be very representative of our general design philosophy for next year. We look forward to hearing the teams’ reactions on this subject. »
