After announcing his departure at the end of the 2013 season and being expressly replaced by Tim Goss as head of McLaren’s technical department, Paddy Lowe will join Mercedes starting June 3rd as the executive technical director of their Formula 1 team, which will have him working closely with Ross Brawn, the current team principal, and Toto Wolff, executive director in charge of business.

Initially, the British engineer was supposed to stay at McLaren until the end of the season, with McLaren looking for a role in which he could continue to help the Woking team without having access to information related to the 2014 car. However, Mercedes and McLaren have reached an agreement to allow Lowe to start earlier than expected, in Brackley: « I am excited to join such a talented and capable organization [as Mercedes], » commented Lowe in a statement released by Mercedes.

« The team has already produced what is probably the fastest car of the 2013 season while the technical challenges of the new 2014 regulations give us the opportunity to maximize the synergies available to a manufacturer. It is a challenge that I look forward to. I have worked closely with Mercedes-Benz for nearly 20 years and deeply admire the company’s phenomenal commitment to Formula 1. I am eager to achieve further success with them in the coming years. »

Ross Brawn, who was at one point considered to be ousted to make way for Paddy Lowe, is pleased with the recruitment of the British engineer: « I am delighted to welcome Paddy to the team and start working with him. He has had an excellent string of successes and would be an asset to any of our rivals in the pit lane. It’s no secret that every team is facing a significant balancing act between this year and the next, but it may be less obvious that there will also be significant changes in 2015 and 2016 as there are advancements in terms of development with the new generation of cars and engines. To deliver results under these circumstances, a winning team needs to strengthen in depth. Paddy’s arrival will strengthen our organization and place us in a strong position for the future. »

If Paddy Lowe remains considered as the successor to Ross Brawn in the long term, the Mercedes team is keen to clarify that, as the team principal, Ross Brawn will retain full responsibility for technical and sporting decisions.
