Button thinks that McLaren needs to understand its car

After a podium this season, reclaimed on a green table in Australia following the disqualification of Daniel Ricciardo, Jenson Button believes it's still necessary to learn from the MP4-29 and not to rely too heavily on future updates to improve performance.

After a start to the season that suggested an interesting year, McLaren has not scored any points since the last two Grand Prix, in Bahrain and China. The objective for the team based in Woking is to get back to scoring points this weekend in Spain.

This could fall well, because after three weeks of break, the Formula 1 cars are arriving with new updates. Jenson Button believes that significant improvements can be made to unlock the full potential of his car: « For the team, it’s not just about adding new parts to test the car on the circuit. It’s also about understanding the secrets of the car, and if we manage to understand these secrets, then we will be competitive » says the former Brawn GP driver about the McLaren in the columns of *Autosport*.

The English driver remains optimistic, however: « We all know that this team has the means to develop the car during the season. I hope we will have the means to fight with the leading pack ».

Behind the scenes, Éric Boullier, the sporting director, has already begun restructuring the team with twelve world drivers’ championship titles to help it regain its former glory: « For us, the goal of the Spanish weekend will be to learn and not to repeat last month’s underperformance in China. The McLaren has been analyzed over these three weeks. We know the areas where our car is weak, and we have taken measures for the short and long term. »

Finally, the former sports director of Lotus looks towards the future: « Although not all of these adjustments will be highlighted in Barcelona, this weekend marks the beginning of a new progression. This is the direction the team wishes to take ».
