Sparks for more spectacle during the F1 passage

Ferrari and Mercedes will test a process this Friday aimed at producing sparks under their cars. The goal is to make the passage of F1 cars more spectacular.

Sparks for more beautiful images, and without any danger to the car and driver? It was an idea that first germinated within the F1 Strategy Group and will become reality during the first Free Practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix.

The sparks will be created by titanium rods placed under the cars. Since the solution is still in its early stages, Ferrari and Mercedes will experiment with different positions (two for each car) for these skid blocks to determine which is the best. The cars of Nico Rosberg and Kimi Räikkönen will be used today for this purpose. No changes should be made to the F1 cars, such as lowering the ground clearance to produce even more sparks.

This first Free Practice 1 session will only be the first step of a novelty that could become mandatory next year if the tests are perfectly conclusive. The answer will likely be given next week during a meeting in Munich of the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).
