Sunday: Kvyat and Vergne betrayed by their Toro Rosso in Austria

Neither Daniil Kvyat, who qualified in the top 10, nor Jean-Eric Vergne managed to see the checkered flag at the Austrian Grand Prix. Both Toro Rosso drivers had to retire due to mechanical issues. Nonetheless, both men are satisfied with the progress made thanks to the new developments introduced.

Jean-Eric Vergne (No. 25) – Retirement

The Frenchman encountered brake problems right from the start and eventually had to retire even though he was hoping to reach the finish line: « I struggled with the brakes from the beginning of the race. It was difficult to drive the car with constant rear lockups. It’s not good for the tire lifespan and balance, so it was a complicated race. I was doing my best to at least finish, but in the end, I couldn’t bring the car to the finish. »

Even though this is now the 5th time he’s retired in 8 Grand Prix in 2014, Vergne remains confident for the rest of the 2014 season: “Problems occur, it’s a shame they happened here, but the new aerodynamic package is working well and we have a good car for the next Grand Prix at Silverstone. There are still many races left and I am convinced that we are heading in the right direction for the rest of the season.”

Daniil Kvyat (No. 26) – Retirement

The Russian is obviously disappointed with the outcome of his Austrian Grand Prix but has nothing to blame himself for: « I am obviously disappointed with how the day turned out, especially since everything had worked so well this weekend and it seemed to be a promising race. Our pace was good, the new developments worked well, as did our tire management. The start was difficult, I lost a few places but managed to regain one. From there, I was able to attack, and we could have achieved a good result. Around lap 26, I saw my right rear tire start to shred, and I had to stop. »

He remains positive nonetheless and satisfied with the new features introduced, hoping to take better advantage of them during the upcoming Grand Prix: « From a positive viewpoint, we made a good step forward this weekend and I think it looks promising for the upcoming races, so I’m looking forward to Silverstone where we will aim higher. »
