Ferrari boss Marco Mattiacci claims the team is facing an enormous amount of work to be more competitive next season.

During preseason testing, it quickly became clear that Ferrari was not on the same pace as Mercedes because the team lacked power and aerodynamic performance compared to its rivals. Mattiacci was appointed the new team principal before the Chinese Grand Prix after Stefano Domenicali resigned and began making changes in the team, such as the departure of engine chief Luca Marmorini, which happened on Thursday.

Mattiacci says that the team must improve in all areas, so that the car is the most competitive next year. For this, according to him, Ferrari will have to work tremendously.

« We need to improve the car in all areas » he told ESPN. « It’s not just the power unit, it’s not just the aerodynamics, it’s not just the chassis. It’s the team and the car, and there is a lot of work to be done. I’m confident in the team spirit we are building, the quality of the people and their strength, and I have confidence in the plan that has been put in place. »

In Budapest, Ferrari had its best race weekend of 2014. Fernando Alonso finished second and Kimi Räikkönen came in 6th at the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, Mattiacci prefers to temper expectations:

« It’s encouraging, but at the same time we need to carefully evaluate this 2nd and 6th place. The values of the other teams were somewhat modified due to weather conditions and track peculiarities. I would be very cautious and we must manage the excitement generated by this result very carefully. I am happy that Kimi is back with a superb race as well as Fernando with a fantastic Grand Prix, but we need to beware of the true significance of this second place. We still have a gap with the leaders » he concludes.
