On the sidelines of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Mercedes team had gone on a bike ride for team cohesion, but not everything had gone very well, especially for Toto Wolff who broke his arm following a fall that also involved other team members. The head of the German team still went to Hungaroring for the F1 weekend.

After the start of the winter break, the Austrian returned, quoted by Bild am Sonntag about his injury: « After the race in Budapest, I suddenly had a fever and had to go back to the clinic. » This notably prevented him from returning to London for a meeting with other officials from the Mercedes F1 team.

Toto Wolff also commented on the negativity surrounding F1 and believes that F1 is still attractive despite a decline in attendance at the German Grand Prix: Just because Hockenheim was down [in terms of spectators] doesn’t mean the sport is bad. I can’t stand this constant negative talk about Formula 1 anymore. It’s simply not true.

We have not had as many overtakes in the last 20 years. We have Alonso who keeps Ferrari going by achieving amazing performances. There is a fantastic question as to whether Ferrari will sideline Kimi Räikkönen. We have Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel desperately trying to fight back after winning four world championships. And we have our two drivers fighting freely for the title. We do not need a revolution, but an evolution,” added Wolff.

In the news of Mercedes, there is also Michael Schumacher, whose German team has promised to follow his recovery. Last June, while Schumacher was still in intensive care, one of the personal sponsors of the German champion, the bottled water brand Rosbacher, announced that it would terminate its advertising contract with the former Ferrari driver.

The CEO of Daimler, Dieter Zetsche stated, cited by Bild am Sonntag, that the brand with the star is not seeking to terminate his contract as ambassador for the team: “We are satisfied with Schumacher’s positive development. We hope that this continues. We have not said anything about a change in Schumacher’s ambassador contract.”

The leader of Mercedes stated that he had not visited his former driver in the hospital or during his rehabilitation since his accident, out of respect for his privacy and his family.
