Charles Pic: « It’s open for next year »
This season, Charles Pic is the third driver for Lotus, waiting for better opportunities. A main driver in 2012 and 2013 with Marussia and Caterham respectively, he has a completely different perspective on the profession this year. MotorsInside caught up with him in the Spa-Francorchamps paddock. The Frenchman reviews his role within the team and his expectations for 2015.

What is your specific role as the third driver?
I participate in simulations, private tests. Normally I was supposed to do some Friday mornings. It was supposed to start in Barcelona. It might be by the end of the year, I don’t know… and during the Grand Prix I participate in meetings, operations with sponsors…
No regrets about not being a starter?
« It’s an interesting experience. The role of the third driver gives you more perspective. In the past, young drivers were assigned to the position, but now it requires experienced drivers to provide the right information. The preparatory work is the same as the main drivers, except I don’t drive. I participate in briefings and give my opinion to ensure the team goes in the right direction. I’m not there to tell the main drivers how to drive! (laughs) »
Exactly, isn’t it too frustrating not to drive?
« Yes, it’s good to drive anyway. I was able to do it during testing in Barcelona and Silverstone. If I do a second year as a third driver, it will be with another program on the side. »
Already some leads for 2015?
« It’s too early. For now, the Ferrari and McLaren seats are being decided. After that, it will trickle down the hierarchy. My priority is to stay in F1. I’m focused on that. When I signed with Lotus, I signed with Gravity for my management, just for this year. For next year, it’s open. »
Endurance, perhaps?
« It’s open. »
You were able to drive it in tests, what do you think of the E22?
« It is not a bad car but it has a very narrow usage window. It is very difficult to adjust. »
And compared to the Caterham you were driving in 2013?
« It’s a big step forward. Even with the regulatory change that made the Lotus less fast than last season. »
